John was home, sick with a particularly nasty cold, so there really wasn't any need for Afonso to go to the stables. After all, during the last few months, he only ever dragged himself there by the older boy's insistence, and clung to him like a limpet whenever they did.
It was no wonder he felt a little lost right now.
He didn't even know why he'd come, to be honest. He did know things had become rather tense at home, what with his mother's constant threats of sending him off to a therapist, (What good would it do? He wasn't exactly gullible to let himself be tricked into talking with some stranger.) and that somewhere nice was where he needed to be. John and he shared such fond memories of this place; it probably made sense to take a time off by coming here.
Even though he could feel the mud giving way under his shoes, Afonso kept on wandering somewhat aimlessly, walking the tree-laden path to the main house. He'd used his horse as an excuse to come, so he probably should check on him. Vaulting over the fence to the pastures once having made sure no one was watching, the boy made his way to the gelding, who watched in anticipation, probably waiting to be led to the stables or a workout in the arena.
The latter wouldn't happen, of course, because that meant Afonso would have to ride him and he would never, ever get on a horse again.
"Hey," he greeted awkwardly once he reached the gelding, keeping a safe distance. Stradivarius perked his ears forward, lowering his head and looking utterly confused. Afonso didn't mind talking to the horses, not at all. They didn't really judge him for what he could and couldn't do, after all. And when they thought something was wrong, they showed it with no hesitation. Just like Loki had done. Sighing softly, he took the few steps separating him from the horse, hesitatingly resting his hand on the creature's muzzle. Stradivarius nuzzled his fingers gently and sniffed them, blowing a warm gust of air on his skin. The boy's hand moved up, scratching the gelding's forehead, tracing the edges of his star.
"I won't ride you, you know," he said, letting his hand fall after a moment to walk past the horse and further into the grassy expanse of the pasture. At first, the gelding simply stood where he was, before trotting on after the other, nudging the back of his head and spreading snot all over his neck, eliciting a slightly hollow laugh from the boy. "Don't you have any sense of personal space?" he asked, shaking his head slightly as he sat down on the grass. Stradivarius promptly laid down beside him, and Afonso raised an eyebrow, but soon buried his fingers in his mane, rubbing circles on the horse's neck, who sighed and laid his head on his owner's lap.
"You're actually quite nice, you know," he said softly, carding his fingers through Stradivarius's long forelock. "I guess I shouldn't have been so quick to judge you. People keep judging me, you know. Another reason why I shouldn't do it. Sorry." Smiling apologetically, Afonso looked down, absent-mindedly tearing some grass from the ground. The gelding reached over, cautiously removing the grass from the boy's fingers, looking very satisfied with himself as he chewed it. "You lazy idiot," Afonso laughed, grinning up at the horse.
A ways off, Alex made his way through the path along the pastures, when he came across a rather peculiar scene. Afonso, curled up against Stradivarius's chest, who alternated between eating grass blades from the boy's hands and tearing them from the ground. Grinning, he took his phone from his pocket, quickly taking a picture before going on his way, while sending it to John. The boy would no doubt be surprised.

asasfdgsah I'm so happy about this. Apparently I work better when I am procrastinating! I've had this story written out for ages... It's good to get on with the storyline, for a change.
