Two steps forward

Gattaca didn't like the rain. She was used to watching it fall through the open window in her stall, not to staying outside while it beat mercilessly on her back. She hadn't moved, however, since the skies had opened only a few minutes ago, even though there was a shelter just a few steps away. Instead, she stood, eyes on the gate, waiting for the welcome sight of a human willing to get her out of the rain and bring her back to her lovely warm stable.

The grey gelding, the one that no one had seemed intent on removing from her vicinity yet, the one she had been surreptitiously stealing glances at for the past few weeks, didn't seem at all fazed. He had his neck stretched, head held low in a look of pure relaxation, and seemed utterly gleeful about the water hitting his back like bullets. It seemed to do nothing but remove a piece from the apparent puzzle that this horse was; how could he like rain, of all things? How could he enjoy being soaking wet, have his mane dripping with water even long after the rain left?

His head rose while she was still staring, warm brown eyes setting on her. Snorting in evident exasperation, Gattaca turned her back to him, hoping that a swish of her tail would be enough to let him know that he was not worthy of the privilege of looking. Hopefully, it would be enough to turn his attention elsewhere. This time, though, she didn't move away. The large gelding, so far, had seemed pretty content on staying on his own place, only moving closer to the fence a few minutes every day; even then, he seemed far more interested on the grass than on her. A strangely atypical behaviour; all the others, so far, had seemed to want to do nothing other than shove their noses far too close to her face - when they weren't being outright aggressive, that was, approaching far too fast with swishing tails and swivelling ears.

Gattaca let out a long sigh, shaking off the water that clung to her coat. Whether she liked it or not, the fact that the humans seemed adamant on keeping him so near meant she had no choice but to tolerate him. Thankfully, that was not too difficult to do - he seemed to enjoy minding his own business, after all.

Yay, rain! We're still battling the heat over here so this isn't too accurate, but oh well. Short story; just a snippet to show you how things are going between these two.

The colour I used to paint Mochi is called 'Gentle Gray'. I found it very fitting.
